"Summer" - Pitney Lane: Score and Parts
"Pitney Lane" broke the Friday mold... it appeared just two days after "Galatea", on Sunday afternoon. I finished it on Monday morning (8/4/14). I am getting the hang of this virtual band.
They never take breaks, don't complain about the pay, and can play anything I write for them. This is jazz straight out of my head. I don't have to worry about finding musicians good enough to play this music, and like the way it is just popping out. Thanks for listening.

Another free-form jazz piece composed on Friday, August 1, 2014. I kept listening to this one as it was being composed. My wife, Carol, said it sounded like I was in love with it... hence the name!
"Summer" - Friday Jam 2: Score and Parts
I recorded this improvised piece on a Friday. It is called "Friday Jam #2" because I already have one called "Friday Jam" that I recorded in Germany in 1982. I was experimenting with the quantization feature of "Notion" to capture a multi-track improvisation. I then spent the next day cleaning it up so that it can be notated for a real jazz combo.

Having finally discovered how to use the Guitar settings in Notion, I offer this musical musing. "A Spanish Thing" is my idea of how an acoustic guitar should fit into a jazz combo.

This is a piece inspired by my friend, Christina Zegrean, who has a most amazing smile. While composing the piece, it occurred to me that all the Christines (Noble and Elvin) and Christinas (Zegrean and Greare) in my life have wonderful smiles. Even the Kristines (Shaw) have beautiful smiles. The Christinas, Christines, and Kristines I know are among my favorite people on the planet. I'd imagine you know a few also!
"Summer" - It's Just There: Score and Parts
I was on vacation in Long Island, NY. This little gem popped out on 8/21/14 and was finished on 8/22/14. It is called "It's Just There" because that title describes the feeling I have about it... music is just right around every corner waiting to be composed.
Apologies to pianists out there. This version of Notion (4) does not do piano notation very well. Get in touch with me and I'll send you something better.
"Summer" - Into Blue: Score and Parts
This "Many of One" piece was inspired by a painting made by my friend, Carolyn Hawley, who was a very fine composer and pianist. She also happened to be quite a fine artist as well. In exchange for a website that I produced for her, Carolyn gave me a print of one of her oil paintings that I think is exquisite. It evoked such strong feelings in me... I just had to have it. This is my impression of what Carolyn put on canvas.

"N.Y." was the last of a series of pieces for jazz ensembles that were composed in the summer of 2014. It was started when my wife, Carol, and I visited friends in Florida during that trip and finished on December 28, 2014. It is a musical portrait of life in and near the "Big Apple".

Fall mornings on our walnut farm is what inspired this "Many of One" piece. I wanted to play with the contrast between tonality and atonality... and sonic leaves falling. Enjoy!
"Summer" - What's That: Score and Parts
A long time ago this jazz theme of four bars popped into my head. It was persistent... kept crowding out any other exposition. I could not get past the first four measures. I wanted desperately to get on with another phrase, but the powerful motif just wouldn't let go. Then, after many years, I realized the motif was enough... that to run wild was what it wanted. Coming back to check on a few snippets of the theme after an improvisation section is more than enough to keep things going happily along. This piece is catchy and wildly enthusiastic. Listen to if you're in the mood something that will make you happy, while twisting your ears back a bit.
