When I was a student at UCSB in 1976 there was a coffee shop called Borsodi's that was open until 3:00AM. One Fall night I walked to my Isla Vista home, hyped on Turkish coffee. Isla Vista is close to the beach in Santa Barbara, so it could also be heard at that time of night. On the way, I saw the shadows of at least two couples projected against curtains, leaves blowing on the street, and a host of other nocturnal visages. The carillon on campus struck the hour. The moment was magical and hypnotic. When I got to my apartment I started composing "Nocturne 1" for Women's Chorus and Chamber Orchestra.
