Chimera

This Sonata for Violoncello and Piano is comprised of three movements:

  • Enola, Yadnom a No
  • Yoj Ruo
  • Emit On Si Ereht

An unusual aspect of this piece is that only the cello plays the second movement. Ideally, the cello should be amplified through an echo/reverb sound system while the movement is being played. Both the echo and reverb should be set quite high. (The composer has found that analog tape loop-type units, like the Roland "Space Echo" RE-201, work best.) The second movement is notated on two staves; the top is for the bowed voice playing all (natural) harmonics, and the bottom is for the plucked left hand part. Yoj Ruo should be played in a free and dream-like fashion. No amplification, echo, or reverberation should be used for the first and third movements.

Tonality - 50%
Difficulty - Professional (Virtuoso)
