While cleaning my parent's garage in 1973 I found an anthology of
poetry printed by USC students from the class of 1924. Windows was
composed from a poem in that anthology that particularly impressed
me. The author's name is Edith Marie King.
Out This Door

I met, and had a brief relationship with a woman who is a very fine
improvisational pianist. She and I had an incredible ability to sit
down and improvise long, beautiful, intense music at the drop of a
dime. I eventually could not spend any time with her; even to play
music. Our personalities clashed too greatly. That was a real shame
because the music was very special. However, I thought my mental health
was more important, so I quickly exited... out this door.
One For My Heart

I have a friend who has the lovely habit of hugging me twice when
we leave each other. One evening it occurred to me that hugs are the
first step to marriage. This song is one about how that might all
get put together.
We've Got To Fall In Love

I met a lovely woman named Cassandra at a company Christmas party
in 1996. We talked off and on about how we are trying to find our
singing voices. We also spoke about how it has felt recovering from
our most recent relationships. She is the inspiration for this song.

I'm Not Your Brother
[Back

This song describes a very frustrating situation that arises between
women and men ... the notion many women have that being involved with
a "nice guy" is too much like being with a "brother". I cannot say
how many times I have heard women complain about relationships with
men who treat them badly, and who are emotionally unavailable to them,
but will not leave these men. Yet, these same women have an apparent
aversion to being intimately involved with a man who is emotionally
supportive, respectful, and would be a loving partner. A man who is
a "diamond in the rough", or who is "rough around the edges", or who
is "more of a challenge" seems to be preferred. I honestly don't understand
why this happens.
Now That You're Gone
[Back

This song expressed how I felt during times when I was separated
from an ex-fiance. It was because of this song that I met Kathleen
Noble. Kathleen came to my apartment to sing "Now That You're Gone"
a few weeks before I went to live in West Germany. I could not use
the recording we made, but we began a friendship that is still very
dear to me. After I returned from Germany in 1983, Kathleen and I
spent a lot of time together. By the spring of 1986 we were pretty
busy with our separate lives, so we saw much less of each other. I
saw her last on the day I was married in June of 1987. In early 1989,
I learned from her parents that Kathleen had been murdered. It took
a long time before I could even listen to this song. "Now That You're
Gone" will be known from this time on as Kathleen's Song. I miss her.
I Already Miss You

One Friday evening in March of 1994 I was at a Safeway store buying
groceries. At the time, I was also bemoaning the fact that I would
be spending the night without a date. Then it struck me that there
were many attractive, interesting looking women who were also shopping
that evening. I was overwhelmed by a sense of irony and the possibility
that any one of these women could potentially be a "significant other".
This song is a definite "sell this one" for the market. It seems to
have universal appeal.

This is another one of those songs I think all of us have in our
hearts, but haven't found a way to say.

Past The Pain
[Back

This song became my personal anthem in the early part of 1991. I
composed it shortly after my wife left in December of 1990. It has
served as a kind of therapy of hope.
I Watch The Years Go By

This is about a situation that many people find themselves in. A
friend of mine, upon hearing this song said "I think you have a corner
on this market I've never heard a song about this subject." This song
is dedicated to Melinda Raynes.

Know The Question
[Back

This song was composed in 1982 for a friend of mine named Eliza Rodriguez.
The song is a kind of documentary of what we talked about all the
time. I've lost touch with her, but I hope she profited from our talks.
I know I did.

I'd like to hear played at weddings all over the world.

Dance 1
[Back To
The Top Of This List] [Back

Composed during the 1991 Thanksgiving day weekend for a dancer and
choreographer named Robin Greenburg. She and I have been involved
in a collaborative dance project since the early part of the year
which has seen many changes in scope, direction, content, and duration
of our work. This piece, Dance 1, represents my attempt to get a handle
on the proliferation of the dance by providing Robin with music in
chunks that can be expanded, contracted, and changed around at will.
It seems to work well with her style of creating, and it did wonders
for my sanity.
Dance 2

This was written for a dance piece that was never performed. A score
is not available of this piece.

This is a free-form improvisation that was created as a MIDI experiment.
A score is not available of this piece.
Parallels
[Back To

This work is actually a series of pieces that were originally roduced
using a Phillips N-4504 reel-to-reel recorder. I could not hear what
was playing n the separate tracks, so I "guessed" at what
was going on. this is the result.
Morning Dance

A walk on the beach with a tape recorder inspired this piece. Seagulls
and the sounds of the ocean breaking against the shore are used as
the sonic backdrop of this very mellow music.
Out Of Time

My ex-wife was about to leave in a few days... she had found an
apartment and had decided our marriage was over. I recorded this piece
late one night, when it was my habit not to sleep. It is disjointed
and sad. It has no meter or time. It is the way I felt.
